Day-long hike on forested snowmobile trails and 4WD roads with lots of natural and human history. Hilly, mixed hardwood/coniferous forest, remote McLeod Pond (beautiful long lake dotted with small islands), in an area that's home to coyote, bobcat, bear, deer, and probably moose. Views from a local summit. Remains of the old Catamount Hill settlement (which lasted about a century, from late 1700s to late 1800s); stone marker of where first U.S. flag was raised over a schoolhouse. Length: about 7.0-7.5 miles. Vertical rise: over 1100 ft. Bring lunch, water, snacks, sturdy boots. Walking sticks helpful (roads washed out in places). Heavy precipitation cancels. Limited to 12.
