1016: Dominica: Tropical Rainforest Hiking and Ecology

Experience one of the most naturally dramatic and beautiful islands of the Lesser Antilles, Dominica. Self-proclaimed "Nature Island of the Caribbean", its verdant mountains, lush valleys, cascading waterfalls and dense tropical rain forests are a delight for those looking to discover a Caribbean island that is off the mass-tourism trail. Dominica's recent claim-to-fame is the site location for filming of Pirates of the Caribbean. The rugged topography rises to nearly 5,000 feet. Our group will stay at a tropical research center facility, owned and operated by a U.S. university. We will spend 4 days on moderately strenuous hikes, one day snorkelling and will enjoy two evening lectures by ecology experts. Lodging is in bunk rooms. Accommodations, 3 meals aday, ground transportation, guides and some tips included. Participants must be able to spend a full day hiking moderately strenuous trails and able to swim. Cost approximately $1400 plus estimated airfare of $800.
