Carpool in caravan heading E. on U.S. Rte 50 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge . At 12.5 mi. E. of the bridge on Rte 50, turn R. on Carmichael Rd. Go 5.1 mi. to cross a wooden bridge onto Wye Isl. (Note "William Paca" historical marker on L., then sharp R., then L. on Wye Isl. Rd. ) After bridge, continue on Wye Isl. Rd 0.95 mi. passing Wye Hall Dr. & W.I.N.R.M.A. office on L. Follow road to R. after another 0.2 mi. Continue 0.75 mi. to sharp L. & then continuing straight on Wye Isl. Rd. another 1.75 mi., pass numerous parking areas to make a R. on Ferry Point Rd. Go 0.3 mi. to park at Ferry Pt. Trailhead. Step off at 10 a.m. to enjoy Hike #45 in "50 Hikes in Maryland " by Leonard M. Adkins, Backcountry Guides, 2000. Explore an island that has been used for agricultural purposes for 3 centuries. The site of a much-contested development proposal in the mid 1970s, 2500 acres are now under the jurisdiction of the MD Dept. of Nat'l Resources and are still managed for agricultural purposes. The island has about 30 miles of shoreline. Virgin stands of timber serve as prime habitat for the endangered Delmarva fox squirrel. Route details & map will be provided.
