6.8 mi. Snickers Gap (VA Rte 7 - Bluemont) S. to Ashby Hollow (VA Rte 605, Frogtown). Annapolis folks:Meet at 7:15 am at Truman Pkwy park/ride lower lot having first eaten breakfast and gotten gas. Depart at 7:30 am - SHARP! Carpool in caravan taking US Rte 50 W. to I-495, Capital Beltway. Take outer loop - N.& W. Continue on I-495 W. to exit 34, Rockville Pike, MD Rte 355. Go N. 2 blocks. Turn R. at Tuckerman Ln to Grosvenor MetroRail station. [DC/Balt. folks: Join carpool/caravan here. Be there NLT 8:15 am -- 2 min. stop only. Look for yellow AMC hand sign.] Depart Grosvenor & follow signs to return to I-495 W-bound. Cross Potomac River. At Beltway exit 45, take Dulles Access Rd, VA Rte 267 (toll), toward the airport but stay in R. lanes avoiding lanes dedicated to airport access. After 12 mi., pass Dulles and stay on 267, now the Dulles Greenway (toll), another 13 mi. to end. At exit 1, the tee with VA Rte 7, Leesburg Bypass/Harry Byrd Hwy, turn L. Go W. on Rte 7 about 19 mi. to Snickers Gap. Just past VA Rte 601, turn L.to A.T. trailhead parking at intersection w. VA Rte 679. Passengers disembark. No facilities. Drivers only depart at 9:15 am to relocate all cars to endpoint. Drivers return to step-off in as few cars as possible. Step off at 10 am. Several steep, rocky ascents make this one of the most difficult sections of the AT in the northern half of VA. Excellent views plus cool, dark hollows. Boots are strongly recommended. Dogs are not. Bring water, and kool snax to share. Bring a gourmet picnic lunch to be consumed on trail. A descriptive excerpt from Exploring the Appalachian Trail - Hikes in the VAs, D.Lillard, etc., Stackpole Books, 1998, and the relevant portion of Map 8 - A.T. in No. VA, S.½ , PATC, Ed.13, 11/06, will be provided.
