11 mi. North Tract - Westside Trails, nr Laurel. Deep woods, wildlife. [A.A.Co. folks: Either go to trailhead on your own or meet at Truman Pkwy park/ride lower lot off Riva Rd nr Annapolis at 7:30 am. Depart at 7:40 am. Take I-97 N. to MD Rte 32. Continue on 32 W. towards Odenton. Exit at MD Rte 198, Laurel Ft Meade Rd. Go W. towards Laurel and continue on 198 around the traffic circle.] [Balt. folks: From I-695,Balt. Beltway, take MD Rte 295 S. Exit at MD Rte 32, Ft. Meade. Pass NSA and exit at MD Rte 198, Laurel-Ft Meade Rd. W. towards Laurel.] Cross Little Patuxent R. Watch for brown Refuge sign on L. Turn L. on Bald Eagle Dr. [DC folks: From I-495, Capital Beltway, go N. on MD Rte 295. Exit at MD Rte 198, Laurel-Ft Meade. Go E. towards Ft. Meade. Note Honda sign at end of ramp and continue 1.4 mi. to brown Refuge sign on R. Turn R. on Bald Eagle Dr.] Follow Bald Eagle 0.4 mi. to Visitor Contact Station. Turn L. at sign: All Vehicles Must Stop Here For Pass.Park. Look for yellow AMC hand sign. Obtain pass inside Station. Station opens at 8 am. Step off at 8:30 am. Trail details & map will be provided. Bring snax to share, & water. Boots are not necessary but always preferred. Canines, while not encouraged, shall be leashed. This is Hike #20 in Paul Elliott's 60 Hikes within 60 Miles, Washington DC, Menasha Ridge Press (2nd ed., 2007). <> He sez: Length - 11 mi. but with shorter options; Configuration - modified loop; Difficulty - moderate; Scenery - woodlands, wetlands, meadows; Exposure - mostly open (trails are wide);Traffic - generally very light; Surface - dirt,gravel, pavement; Duration - 4 ½ hrs; Facilities - At Contact Station. <> Show & Go.
