8.3 mi. Point-to-point. Amazingly secluded woodland experience in midst of metro area. Deer and other wildlife are surprisingly abundant. [A.A.Co. folks:] Meet at 8 a.m. at Truman Pkwy park/ride lot off Riva Rd., Annapolis. Depart at 8:15 a.m. sharp! Carpool in caravan. Take U.S. Rte 50 W. towards D.C. Pass the Capital Beltway, I-495/I-95 and exit onto East- West Hwy, MD Rte 410. Go west. [Balt. folks: Go south towards D.C. on MD Rte 295, Balt.-Wash. Pkwy. Take the E-W Hwy exit, Rte 410. Go west.] [D.C. - Find E-W Hwy on your own!] Turn left or south on Riggs Rd, MD Rte 212, and immediately get in left lane. Turn left at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, 6609 Riggs Rd, Chillum 20782-1526. Park. Be there by 9 a.m. Drivers depart at 9:15 to relocate cars to hike terminus. [Using MetroRail? Email or call the hike leader no fewer than 12 hrs in advance to arrange a pick-up at P. G. Plaza Metro Station (green line) at the kiss/ride curb.Must be on curb NLT 8:45 a.m. clearly identified as a hiker!] Step off at 10 a.m. The linear Sligo Creek Pk trail is mostly flat, paved, and shared with bikers/bladers. Route is NW starting in the Chillum area of P.G. Co. and ending north of University Blvd in Wheaton. Pace will be brisk with slight to moderate incline all the way. Boots are preferred but not required unless weather conditions dictate. Bring some water & sharable snax. Dress in layers. Wear a backpack to carry your extra clothes from the inevitable overdressing. A map will be provided. Canines strongly discouraged but, if present, must be leashed. Hike is on rain or shine. "Show & Go." (No RSVPs, please.) Post-hike possibilities include Swedish meatballs at IKEA and holiday shopping at REI, both in nearby College Park.
